Voilà trente ans que la parution des deux volumes du recueil d’inscriptions Nomima par F. Ruzé et H. van Effenterre a permis à plusieurs générations d’étudiants et d’historiens français (et étrangers) un accès inédit aux documents épigraphiques grecs d’époque archaïque. Au-delà du recueil de textes traduits, Nomima visait également à porter, à partir des inscriptions, une certaine idée du monde grec archaïque, de ses institutions, de ses rapports sociaux ou encore des relations de pouvoirs (économiques, politiques).
Depuis trente ans, aucun texte neuf n’a, à lui seul, révolutionné la discipline. Mais d’importantes découvertes comme celles de Méthone ou Érétrie ont permis, par leur mise en série, de jeter une lumière nouvelle sur les pratiques et le rôle de l’écrit en Grèce durant les hautes époques.
L’objectif de ce dossier est donc, à travers l’hommage rendu aux Nomima, de dresser le bilan de ces trente années de découvertes et de recherches sur l’épigraphie grecque archaïque en axant la réflexion sur les liens entre épigraphie et histoire autour de quelques dossiers épigraphiques en Crète ou en Grèce propre. Ce faisant, nous nous interrogerons sur l’insertion de l’épigraphie dans les nouveaux questionnements sur la Grèce archaïque qui tendent, notamment, à sortir d’une vision centrée sur les élites et sur Athènes.

It has been thirty years since the publication of the two volumes of the collection of Nomima inscriptions by F. Ruzé and H. van Effenterre has given several generations of French (and foreign) students and historians unprecedented access to Greek epigraphic documents from the Archaic period. Beyond the collection of translated texts, Nomima also aimed to convey, sparking from inscriptions, a certain idea of the archaic Greek world, its institutions, its social relations and power relations (economic, political).
In the last thirty years, no new text has revolutionized the discipline on its own. But important discoveries such as those of Methone or Eretria have made it possible, through their serial display, to shed new light on the practices and role of writing in Greece during the early periods. The objective of this dossier is therefore, through the homage paid to the Nomima, to take stock of these thirty years of discoveries and research on archaic Greek epigraphy by focusing on the links between epigraphy and history around a few epigraphic files in Crete or Greece proper. In doing so, we will question the insertion of epigraphy into the new questions about archaic Greece that tend to move away from a vision centered on the elites and on Athens.
